Why You Don't Have To Worry About Competition

It's no secret anymore. We are in a new day and age for the recording industry. Gear is cheaper than it ever has been. You can mix in the box. Track limits are pretty much gone. We are in a digital age now.

What does this mean for the recording industry?

Well, quite simply, it means things are changing. One major change is that more and more people are able to get into the audio engineering field. I think this is good. (Some people don't.) It also means that musicians are less likely to have to go to a large studio and drop a ton of money on making a record.

So if you want to get into audio engineering, don't you have to worry about competing with a ton of other engineers?

The answer is NO.

You don't have to worry about competition. Here's why.

Nobody can replicate you.

You have something that no one else has. You're you! Nobody else can be you. Nobody else can mix or record a song just like you. Nobody else can work with a client just like you. This instantly sets you apart from everyone else and alleviates the concern of having to worry about competing. If you want to run an audio engineering business, you need to set yourself up that way. Advertise yourself and not just your services. Let people know that they are getting to work with you. This is how you stand out.

Get creative.

When you are working for a client, you want to figure out how you can implement your individual strengths and unique offerings into their projects. This means making creative decisions when mixing or recording. This may mean playing an instrument part on their record if you can. Simply put, find a way to go above and beyond for your client and add your individuality to their project. This will gain you loyal clients and referrals.

I've heard every excuse in the book for why you can't make it in the audio field.

The market is over saturated. There are too many audio engineers. The supply and demand isn't balanced. Musicians can't afford it anymore. etc. etc. etc.

The list goes on and on. The point is, a good business person or freelancer knows how to adapt and change with the market. If you're wondering, "is there money in the audio engineering field," simply look around and see if anyone is doing it. If so, then there is money to be made. You just have to be a hard worker and smart. Don't worry about competition, but rather worry about adding your own individuality to projects and finding a way to go above and beyond for the people you do work with. This will take you far.
