The Secret to Returning Clients

I'm sure a lot of you are just getting into recording or mixing to better improve your own music and help yourself as a musician. That's how I started. Shortly after however, I realized that I really enjoyed this and potentially could turn it into a profitable business. And for some of you, this may happen or you may already be in the same boat. With that said, this post is directed mainly to those who want to run a profitable recording, mixing, or mastering business.

Today I want to share with you a way that you can keep clients coming back time and time again as well as get more referrals.

Over Deliver

It's a pretty simple concept, and yet works surprisingly well. The idea here is to over deliver on your products. This means you need to do more than is expected of you. If you begin implementing this concept into your business, you will see more return clients and referrals than before.

What does this look like in the audio industry?

As to how you will over deliver, it will depend on the aspect of music you are working in. Let's say you are a recording engineer. What are some ways you can over deliver for your client? Here's just a few ways.

  • Act as the producer and help them get more creative
  • Offer to play an instrument track on a song
  • Throw in a free service such as an hour of studio time
  • Be a fan of their music and share their projects

The idea is to simply do more than the clients expect. You give them a realistic expectation of what your service entails, and then you throw in something extra that they weren't expecting. Now you don't have to go overboard. It can be real simple like finishing a project ahead of schedule or sharing their music. This will stand out to the client and they will remember above others who only do what is expected of them.

What about in mixing or mastering?

The same concept applies. Find ways to over deliver. This may be offering to do a master for free, finishing a good bit ahead of schedule, etc. There are many ways you can over deliver and this gives you the opportunity to be creative. For me, the main two ways that I over deliver is by having a much faster turnaround than the client expects, and having a very fast email return time. This lets them know that I value their time and am serious about my business.

If you haven't already, start implementing the concept of over delivering into your business today and watch it grow.
